Teaching

International Level

Our pioneering hip surgery in Cornwall has resulted in regular invitations to speak at key orthopaedic meetings throughout the world.
As part of consultancy agreement  with a number of implant manufacturers, I regularly participated in international training meetings and courses in the UK and abroad, for surgeons wishing to learn the techniques of hip resurfacing.
On a more direct and practical level, I have received visiting surgeons from America, South America, South Africa, Australia and throughout Europe. The visiting surgeons operate with me at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, and at the Duchy private hospital, gaining valuable practical experience.
Many surgeons visit to learn the management and surgical techniques of hip impingement surgery.

National Level
I was the Training Programme Director for orthopaedic surgery in the South-west  Deanery for 4 years. I represented  the interests of trainees and trainers at regional and national meetings, and developed a strong training programme in collaboration with the Royal College of surgeons, the British Orthopaedic Association and the South-West Deanery.  During this time, our region’s success rate in the demanding FRCSOrth examination for senior orthopaedic trainee surgeons was 100%.
I was an invited by the British Orthopaedic Association to lecture at their annual residential course for trainees.
I was an instructor in Advanced Trauma Life Support, and became a Course Director for ATLS in Cornwall

Local Level
On my appointment as a Consultant in Truro, I took on the role of local orthopaedic registrar training co-ordinator in Cornwall. I supervised the local trainees, ensuring that we had  strong mentoring and appraisal processes in place to support them. I represented the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust at the regional training meetings.
